About Tavistock itself.......
Tavistock is a picturesque market
town situated on the River Tavy, close to the border between Devon and Cornwall.
It is adjacent to both the Dartmoor National Park and the Tamar Valley Area
of Outstanding Natural Beauty. It is (approx) a half hour drive by car from
the Historic City of Plymouth, with its famous Hoe and Barbican.
Tavistock was recently voted the
"Best Market Town In Britain 2004"!
The town centre has a wide variety
of shops, boutiques and restaurants, at the heart of which is the pannier
market; a nest of antiques and curios. Additional attractions include the
Meadowlands Leisure Pool complex, and the Wharf Arts Centre.
It is believed that Tavistock stands
on the site of an ancient Saxon settlement. Formal records of the town, however,
date back to 974AD, with the founding of a Benedictine Abbey. The ruins of
this Abbey can still be seen at various points close to Bedford Square. |
